Engraving and Lettering

Our time served Monumental Masons are skilled in the art of engraving and lettering on all types of stone. If you’re looking to add a personal message to your headstone or kerb set, we ensure it is perfectly placed and expertly crafted delivering a beautiful presentation with maximum longevity.

Engraving

It’s all in the little details

Headstones are usually engraved in 4 main lettering styles, including a block font and a more decorative script style. Typically, a headstone will have the person’s name, date of birth and date of death engraved. You can also add other wording like a tribute or quotation – your funeral director will let you know of any restrictions that apply in your area.

Whether an existing headstone is starting to lose letters, or you wish to add lettering to an existing memorial we can help. However, all engraving and lettering needs to be quoted for on a case-by-case basis.

For more information and to understand a true quote to add lettering to your Headstone, please contact the office direct or use the contact form by clicking on this ‘Free Quote’ and opting for lettering.

Engraving in Situ

We have the apparatus

When needing to add wording on an existing memorial in a cemetery, we can achieve this for you in situ. We would work on the memorial on site and in place, we would not move the memorial unless it was deemed loose or unsafe.

Our in situ lettering service saves our client the cost of the removal and refix of the headstone and also reduces the chance of the memorial breaking.

We would naturally engrave the new lettering to match the same colour and style of the existing font.

Leaded Letters

A dying art form

Our Monumental Masons can also perform leaded letter engraving specific application for marble headstones. As marble is slowly becoming out of fashion owing to the maintenance requirements, unfortunately not every stonemason can apply leaded letters and the art is dying out.

A leaded inscription is a traditional way of creating long lasting inscriptions on headstones – particularly on white or light-coloured stone such as marble. It not only helps the lettering stand out but also helps against overall weathering.

Albert Jones Memorials are delighted to advise that our expert Monumental Masons engravers have the skillset to apply leaded letters to marble gravestones, an act they have been perfecting for more than 40 years!

Working with Gold Leaf

23ct and quality assured

Our expert Monumental Masons use Loose Gold Leaf when gilding on stone. There are several ways to apply the leaf, every mason having their own technique that works for them. The leaf is usually rolled from the booklet onto the pre prepared lettering and then brushed over with a Gilders Mop to brush away any excess leaf.

How long does it last?

If gilded correctly 23ct or above Gold Leaf can last for between 20 – 30 years external unsealed. It is recommended that gold leaf that is 23ct or above is not sealed as most sealers tend to break down over a period and typically only last for around 3-5 years.

FACT!

We do not use spray paint!

Beware, other stonemasons may choose to use gold spray paint. Unfortunately, as expected, this will only last approximately one year, leaving your headstone in an undesirable state.

We are very proud of the traditional and expert methods we use.
